Sonder Tower 2 is an exercise of small intervention to create a house with just a little more space.  Original Canberra ‘ex-govies’ have economical floorplans that can fall short of contemporary family demands and performance standards.  This extension will see a new elevated main bedroom suite over a minimal living room expansion below.  The staircase is designed as a light well, bringing the northern sun deep into the interior of the existing dwelling.

By stacking the building volumes, garden space is preserved, which enhances the occupants’ lifestyle and connection to nature.  Canberra is well known for its treed streets and landscape corridors.  We worked hard to keep a beautiful existing tree of significance to the clients, which contributes to the neighbourhood and street character.  The extension nestles into the canopy, creating a light-filled treehouse with views of the mountains.
